VRTB Basics

Please note the Voluntary Right to Buy Midlands Pilot is now CLOSED to new applicants.

The gateway for registering your interest and getting a unique reference number (URN) was open from 16 August to 16 September.  The Government will decide when/if to reopen this.  Keep checking the Government’s VRTB website https://righttobuy.gov.uk/ for the latest updates. You cannot contact us to go any further with the purchase if you have not been allocated a URN

It is important to note that your URN will only last for four weeks from date of receipt. After this it will no longer work. You therefore need to make sure you contact us straight away if you have been allocated a URN by the Government in order to start the process of buying your home

The Government launched a Midlands-based pilot of the Voluntary Right to Buy on 16 August 2018.  We are taking part in this.

This means that some assured tenants of housing associations living in general needs properties (this applies to general family housing and dwellings for singles and couples and which is not part of an Independent Living Scheme or an Extra Care Housing complex) in the Midlands may be able to buy their home from their housing provider.

If you have already registered on the Government gateway you will be told if your entry has been successful.  As this is a pilot, the number of sales is strictly limited.  Not everyone who enters will receive a URN.  Successful entrants will be selected at random through a computer ballot undertaken by the Government.

To purchase your home you need to first have been allocated a Unique Reference Number (URN) by the Government before you can apply to us.

There is no confirmation yet of when the VRTB will be rolled out on a national basis. Keep checking the Government’s Right to Buy website (www.righttobuy.gov.uk) for updates.

Whilst we have been able to decide certain aspects of our policy and procedure, a number of the rules for the pilot have been set by the Government – including the decision on who is eligible to purchase their home and from what areas.
