Housing Benefit is a regular payment towards your rent and is available to those who are unemployed or on a low income with savings/capital of less than £16,000. Housing Benefit can cover your rent and some service charges but does not cover other costs like utility bills (gas, water, electricity) or care and/or support costs.
Unlike Universal Credit, which is dealt with by the Department for Work and Pensions, Housing Benefit is administered by your local council. To find out who your local council is please refer to the “find your local council” link in the links section.
How much someone is entitled to varies and is dependent on their individual circumstances, income and capital / savings.
You can check and see if you are entitled to Housing Benefit by using the one of the benefit entitlement calculators which can be found on the gov.uk website or you can find general eligibility information on the same website.
