Changes to your benefits

Through its welfare reform programme, the Government has been making many changes to benefits. If you are of working age and receive benefits, you are almost certain to be affected.

Details of some reforms are still to be finalised, so this information may change. We'll keep this website up to date with the latest news.

These changes are likely to affect you by:

  • Reducing your income
As the changes take effect, you may receive less money in benefits. You need to ensure that you can still cover your most important outgoings, like your rent.
  • Giving you more responsibility for your money
The changes allow people on benefits to manage their money themselves, in the same way as those who are paid wages. Under Universal Credit, all your benefits will be paid direct to you in one payment which has to last the whole month. You will have to plan your household budget.
  • Making you responsible for paying your rent
Previously, your rent may have been paid directly to us. When you receive Universal Credit, any benefit to cover your housing costs will be included in your single monthly payment. You will then be responsible for paying your rent to us.

It is important you understand how these changes affect you or you could be at risk of losing your home.

You can find lots of information and tools to help you with budgeting, opening a bank account or increasing your income in Help with managing your money.
